THE $4 OYSTER STILL EXISTS - ZEBRA LOUNGE, PYRMONT

An honest, unpolished hospitality experience that leans into Craig’s no-nonsense approach to wine, sharp oyster pricing, and long lunches done properly.

Zebra Lounge sits at the base of Harris Street in Pyrmont, tucked beneath an apartment block just metres from Sydney Harbour. It’s the kind of place that feels like a local secret, hidden in plain sight.... but only if you know where to look.

(and its completely puppy friendly, so Monte Cavoodle could join us)

The menu is a quiet tribute to Australian seafood. Tight, deliberate, and familiar café and restaurant staples executed with a clear respect for natural flavour, subtlety, and texture.

Sydney Rock oysters (natural) at $4 each set the tone, as they say, "every meal starts better with oysters." And yes, $4. In a city where $8–$9 has become the norm, Zebra holds the line. Freshly shucked, generously sized, served simply with lemon. Paired with a Barossa Valley Semillon, it’s a strong opening statement.

The Zebra interpretation of a bouillabaisse is light and lifted. More Sydney sunshine than Marseille depth. The bisque trades heaviness for clarity, tomato, herbs, lemon, supported by sourdough, not weighed down by it.

Alongside it, an Infinity Blue barramundi fillet. Crisp skin with a near glass-like crunch, sitting over a composed salad of cos, couscous, avocado, walnuts, and cranberries. Clean, balanced, and confident in its restraint.

Each dish is paired with a suggested wine, but the real move is to speak to Craig. We discussed flavour, preferences, direction and then handed over control. “Just surprise us.”

That, it turns out, is some for of magic password.

What followed was a rolling exploration: Grüner Veltliner, Soave Tamellini, Pinot Blanc, and a selection of Chardonnays each poured with intent, each building on the last.

No dessert for us, but the finale still arrived. A blind tasting. One final glass, poured without explanation. A simple challenge: guess.

The perfect ending.

Thanks to Craig and the team for a long lunch done right, in the autumn sun.

My last meal out before surgery the next day and six weeks off the grid 🩼
