Great local craft brewery and bbq in the heart of Penrith, Greater Western Sydney.

Whenever in a different part of Sydney with 30-60mins to spare I cant help but type "brewery" into maps and see what pops up, and out in the west, maps introduced me to the name Rusty Penny Brewing

Located in in an industrial area a few turns off Mulgoa Road, between a two tile stores, an electrical supplier and a party hire shop, is the warehouse of Rusty Penny. Out here, clearly space is not an issue, so don't expect a small an inner west brewery, this place is huge.

The beverage choice matches the venue size, its huge with 24 different taps, 19 beers and 5 seltzers, sodas and ciders. First time here so its the 6 glass tasting paddle, whichis a perfectly simple process, you call out 6 numbers, they write it on box in posca pen then start pouring. I choose the easy option and went with numbers 2-7 on the board.

  • Pales James "American Pale Ale" 5.4%

  • Penrith Walker XPA 5.0%

  • High Street Haze IPA 6.5%

  • The Penny IPA 7.2%

  • Red Beard "Irish Red Ale" 4.5%

  • (one extra) Just a Beer Fresh Hop Pale Ale 5.2%

Overall a good sample selection of beers, definitely something there to keep everyone happy, the high ABV were standouts with a deeper and more complex flavours. The can art is also a highlight, click here to see their shop and their cans

The other reason the Rusty Penny packs people in is the smoker and Rusty's BBQ Meats. The menu is extensive so we tried a few things



  • The James Sausage Burger with slaw and hot sauce

  • Reverse Seared Cheese Burger with bacon and bbq sauce

  • Onion Rings

  • Brisket

  • Pulled Pork

  • Burnt Ends



The burgers were spectacular, the meat was BBQed perfectly thought it really lacked any smoker flavour, highlights were the sausage burger and burnt ends.

The Rusty Penny is what a craft brewery should be! Make the beer onsite, have a big variety of brews, include some other options to keep everyone happy. Make sure you have great food that beers lovers want to eat, and not just because they've had a handful of brews.
